Ahh, music, one of the truest expressions of Gladism. I've been playing the piano
almost as long as I can remember. The guitar followed and I am truly one of the worst clarinetists
ever. Before continuing on to other, perhaps more ridiculous endeavors, I studied music composition
in college at DePauw University. There's something about Greencastle, Indiana, those amber waves
of corn, and being surrounded by a myriad of silly fraternities and sororities that can inspire
a creative spirit in just about anyone. Those last few years in the previous century were some of
my most productive.
The GladTunes archives are separated into three, admittedly somewhat presumptuous
categories:
The Formative Five contain work done in the five years between '92 and '97,
when Grunge
ruled the pop-culture world and the greatest movement in Rock and Roll in two and a half decades had
hit the scene. This was the time when CDs were taking over the market and the first generation of
kids were becoming enamored with those antique vinyl records in their parents' collection. The music
reeks of the amateurish quality inate to the souls of boys in their early teens.
The Etudes are the result of my formal college education with emphasis in early 20th
century composition. In retrospect, the compositions are wrought with other influences at the time
including the languages of musical theatre and film score. All compositions were recorded in Thompson
Recital Hall at DePauw during Student Composition Recitals.
The Fuse are the output of GladPad Studios, alpha and beta chapters. Recorded
painstakingly using an old Ensoniq SQ2 keyboard and an AIWA stereo system with two tape decks, these
are a fusion of all influences formal and otherwise. The themes are long and theatrical and were
often written and recorded in collaboration with friends from the DePauw University Performing Arts
Department.
